The Secret Life of your Shoes
And Why It Matters More Than You Think
When was the last time you really looked at your shoes — not for style, but for function?
Whether you’re walking the dog, chasing the kids, or running marathons, your shoes take a beating. And when they wear out, they don’t always tell you with a hole or a tear — they whisper it through joint pain, fatigue, and subtle changes in how you move.
As physiotherapists, we often see pain that begins at the feet. Here’s how to know when your shoes are quietly causing problems.
1. Your Shoes Look… Fine (But Feel Wrong)
Sometimes worn-out shoes look totally normal but lose their internal structure:
The insole feels “flat” or thin
Your arch feels unsupported
Your knees or low back ache after walking
If your shoes no longer absorb shock or offer support, your body takes the hit instead.
2. The Tread Tells a Story
Flip your shoes over. The sole pattern should wear down evenly. If not, it could mean:
Outer heel wear: You’re over-supinating (rolling out)
Inner heel wear: You may overpronate (rolling in)
One side more worn: Could indicate a leg length difference or pelvis misalignment
3. The Shoe Has Lost Its Shape
Your shoe should sit flat and symmetrical on the ground. If it:
Leans inward or outward
Tilts when placed on a table
Bends too easily through the midfoot
…it’s likely past its prime and no longer supporting your foot correctly.
4. You’ve Had Them Forever
Even if they still look okay, most shoes have a limited lifespan: running shoes – replace after 500-800km (~6 months ) , daily walking shoes – 6-12 months, work shoes – annual
Why Physios Care About Your Footwear
